Highlights of 2017

I'm finally back on this much-neglected blog to share some of the highlights of 2017:

This compilation was created with the 1 Second Everyday app, which is amazing and so simple to use. It's also a lot easier to take videos rather than photos of two energetic kiddos!

I'm carrying on this method of documenting in 2018 (and probably beyond!).

PS I thought about creating a lowlights video as well, but does anyone really want to see all the fighting, tantrums, arguments, and huge piles of laundry? I decided not ;)

Weird Dreams

I often have pretty strange dreams (like these!) and these would have to be some of the weirdest:

1
I'm not sure what I was doing in outer space, and I'm really not sure why my grandma was with me, but something went terribly wrong and we were somehow ejected from the space craft. And then we exploded (as you do!)

2
Probably the most disturbing dream I've had, I discovered that my palm was hollow and full of cobwebs since there were spiders living inside. I'm not usually bothered my spiders but in this case I definitely was!

3
In a recent dream I found out that the world was about to end. The thing I was most worried about? That I was going to lose my blog since it was only backed up on earth. I think that this month of daily blogging is starting to mess with my head...

Where I'm From

I am from the edge of the world
from hokey pokey ice cream and bonfires on the beach.
From scavenger hunts and water divining
peas in the pod and smooth stones under bare feet.

I am from the lady in the bay
from lips stained with purple peaches and never locking the door.
From roller skating down the path and xmas in summer
making huts up the back and shelves overflowing with books.

I am from first to see the sun
from jumping off the old wharf and fruit juice mixed with lemonade.
From wandering the hills and the quiet streets
always ending up back at the place where I'm from.

Thanks to Alana for the inspiration. Here's the original poem, and a template if you want to write one too.

Childhood Memories

Some of the things I remember about my childhood that make me laugh now:

1
When I was little (probably about three years old) I went to the bank with my dad. While he was lining up I was running around, and coming back to tackle him around the legs every now and then. At some point the line moved forward without me noticing. I ran back one more time and grabbed his legs, and then realised with horror that it wasn't my dad at all, and my arms were wrapped around a strangers knees. So I cried, and I was too scared to play around at the bank ever again.

2
While I was growing up my parents always emphasised the importance of good manners. I can remember my mother growling at me once when I was about four years old for being impolite. I decided that she didn't realise how polite I really was. My evidence? I explained to her that "the other day I saw a fat person and I didn't even say anything". She didn't find my argument very convincing!

3
I really wanted to watch Jaws 3 when I was six years old, but my parents weren't too keen to have a traumatised child on their hands. Mum promised that she'd tape the movie so I could watch it the next day, but she never promised she'd tape the whole movie. Instead she only recorded the first few minutes (until one of the little sharks dies), and told me that was it. I didn't find out about this incident until many years later and when I finally watched the full version of Jaws 3 I realised I hadn't missed anything (it's pretty terrible!). But I still think it's one of the reasons that I'm obsessed with great white sharks.

What are the funniest memories you have from your childhood?

Bicycle Love

I mentioned that one of my goals this year is to finish restoring my retro bicycle. At the moment it's very slow going, I'm getting close to finishing painting the body but need to buy more supplies and I just want to get it done already!

I'm really looking forward to riding around while the weather's still nice, and watching videos like this one (via LA) makes me even more impatient:

This reminds me of all the mornings biking to school with my friend Nicola. It was downhill all the way and we spent most of the time riding along with no hands and singing really loudly.

If I'd known about all these moves it would have been even more fun!

My Favourite Holidays

While getting excited about our trip to Europe I've been thinking of some of my favourite holidays from the past. New Zealand might be a small country but there's a lot to see, and Australia is pretty close too (even if everything else is a fair distance away)!

My first time overseas was a family trip to Australia. We drove from Brisbane to Townsville over a few days, which included a day of snorkelling Great Barrier Reef, a trip to a wildlife park to hold snakes and wombats, and finding out that our car could talk. After meeting up with some family friends we headed back down to the Gold Coast for a theme park extravaganza. I love those rollercoasters!

Our group of friends bought a cheap van together especially for our roadtrip up north. We covered as much ground as possible, driving up the east coast of the south island before zigzagging across most of the north island, all in a couple of weeks. My memories of the trip include lots of swimming, last minute scrambles to find somewhere to sleep,  driving down the beach, voting on whether to get the van fixed or keep going (it was a unanimous decision to keep going), barbecues nearly every night, and meeting up with friends all over the place.

The next summer we decided to do a bit of travel in the south island. We still had our van from the last roadtrip, so Owen and I plus Gareth and his girlfriend spent a few days driving around Queenstown and the west coast. We had lots of adventures (like visiting the glaciers, going on the gondola, luging, and watching fireworks) and a few misadventures (like missing the countdown for new years, and camping in a "no camping" area that turned out to be at a very popular tourist attraction the next morning).

I can't wait until our trip next year!

Love Story

Although we grew up together in a small town by the sea, Owen and I didn't see a lot of each other when we were little. We went to the same school, but even though we were in the same class for a couple of years we had completely different friends and interests.

Owen's first from the left in the middle row, I'm third from the right in the front row

Throughout high school we were in the same classes, which was when I started falling in love with Owen. I kept quiet about it though, we moved in different circles and I was happy to admire him from afar! Things changed when we were sixteen. After a year of flirting in maths class (I'm surprised we both ended up with good marks, since we didn't do a lot of work!) we shared our first kiss at a party. The next time we saw each other was a little awkward, so we both pretended it had never happened!

Owen's second from the left in the front row, I'm behind him in the red dress

Avoiding the situation lasted a few weeks, until Owen asked me out just before school finished for the year. At first I wasn't entirely sure, which with hindsight seems so strange. How could I not have known? Luckily I made up my mind fairly quickly and said yes!

Eight years later, one third of my life. Sometimes in seems like no time has passed at all, but when I think of everything that's happened it feels like even longer! Since we first got together we've finished high school, moved to the city to attend the same university, finished our degrees, moved in to a little place by the sea, started our first serious jobs, adopted a cat, and next year we're planning on travelling together.

Sometimes I wonder what my eleven-year-old-self would think if she could see the way that things have worked out!
